Hi friend! Have you ever noticed that what most of us call “me” is often something we’ve built along the way?
A version designed to fit in, keep the peace, please the right people and stay safely inside the lines of normal. It’s competent and reliable – and because it’s been running for so long, it’s easy to mistake it for who you actually are.
But what if this way of living can actually turn into a kind of autopilot? Sure, it gets you up, gets you to work, gets you through the to-do list… Hurray! And yet it’s also how someone can have a life that looks great on paper and still feel like they’re watching it from the outside.
So what if the real you, underneath all that management, is something far more alive than you’ve ever let yourself imagine? And what if deep down, that is what so many of us are yearning for?
Why the average is becoming more common
If anything, in this AI-powered age we’re living in, the pull towards lives-on-autopilot is getting stronger. Researchers have found that AI tools tend to nudge people’s writing, art, creation towards the same middle, so that even distinctive ideas start to sound alike once a chatbot has polished them.
And what if this isn’t new – just happening faster and faster? Long before ChatGPT, parents, teachers, employers and culture were all handing us templates for who to be. Algorithms simply automated the delivery – with the result that average has never been easier to reach for.
I often compare choosing to be you to unplugging from the Matrix.
And when you’re courageous enough to choose that, you may notice that many key areas of your life begin to shift.
Choosing becomes quicker and easier, your relationships are more enjoyable, money gets lighter and your body is finally able to exhale. Any of this starting to sound good?
Choosing beyond autopilot
If you’re curious what choosing to turn off the autopilot can create in your life, I invite you to look at all the areas your time, energy and attention actually went to over the past week. Be honest with yourself, no-one else will see this.
Now, consider where you’d be choosing to put that attention and energy if you were designing your life from scratch. Would anything change from your first list?
If there is a difference between the two, between what you say matters and what you’re actually living, that is where the autopilot hides.
Most people never realise this. Seeing it, and recognising that you can choose differently, and always could is how you get back in the driver’s seat again.
I’m excited for you to explore this.
