A Different Relationship with Choice

Hi friend! My question for you today is: what would it be like to make decisions from awareness rather than overthinking?

Most of us make decisions by weighing up pros and cons, going with our gut, or just defaulting to what’s familiar. Sometimes that works. A lot of the time, we end up in the same place we’ve always been and can’t quite figure out why.

Luckily, there’s a question that cuts through all of that. It’s simple, it takes about three seconds, and it works on everything from what to do with your afternoon to which direction to take your business.

The question is: If I choose this, what will this create?

Why It Works

Most of the decision-making people tend to do is backwards-facing. We evaluate options based on what we already know, what’s worked before, what feels safe, what other people think we should do. We’re essentially using the past to choose the future, which is a predictable way of getting more of the same.

The question I suggested above does something quite different. It asks you to project forward – not with analysis, but with awareness. What does this choice actually lead to? What does it open up, and what does it close down?

In this way, you’re not looking for a logical answer. You’re looking for a felt sense: an expansion or a contraction, a lightness or a heaviness. That response is information. And it’s often more accurate than anything your reasoning mind could come up with.

How to Use It

Using this question is straightforward. When you’re facing a choice (any choice!), pause and ask: If I choose this, what will this create?

Then notice what happens in your body. Does something open up or tighten? Does each option feel lighter or heavier? Try not to overthink the response. The first thing you notice is usually the most honest.

If you have a few options, run through each one:

If I choose this, what will this create?
If I choose this, what will this create?
If I choose this, what will this create?

You’re not looking for certainty. You’re looking for more information than you had before. And even if you can’t fully interpret the response you’re getting at first, keep going. Like any tool, it gets easier with use.

The Tricky Part

Here’s something worth knowing though: sometimes the option that feels lightest is also the one you’ll be most likely to talk yourself out of.

You’ll know it’s the right choice, and then time, money, practicality, or what other people might think will show up and you’ll default to something else. That’s normal. It doesn’t mean the question isn’t working – it means you’re getting honest information about what you actually want, and then choosing to override it.

Just noticing that pattern is useful. Because the question isn’t only about making better decisions in the moment. It’s about starting to see where you’re choosing against yourself, often without realising it.

It Works on the Small Stuff Too

This isn’t just for big decisions. In fact, starting with smaller everyday choices is a good way to build the muscle.

Should I take this call or finish what I’m working on? Go to that event or stay home? Reply now or wait?

If I choose this, what will this create?

The more you use it, the more you start to notice that even small choices have a direction. They either move you toward more energy, more ease, more of what you want to be creating, or they don’t. And that awareness compounds over time.

A Different Relationship With Choice

What this question really does, underneath the practicality of it, is shift you from feeling like things are happening to you, to recognising that you’re actually the one making choices. Even when those choices are unconscious, even when you’re choosing by default or by avoidance, you’re still choosing.

That’s not about blame. It’s about power. Because if you’re the one choosing, you’re also the one who can choose differently.

The question just makes that visible.

Try it today on three decisions, big or small. What do you notice?

Grateful for you,
Dain
