Today, I’d like you to start by thinking of someone you know who has a lot of money.
Now ask yourself honestly: do they seem wealthy? Not financially – wealthy as a person. Are they happy? Easy to be around? Do they seem like they’re actually enjoying their life?
For a lot of even the most financially successful people, the answer is no…
See, most of us grew up with a simple idea: more money equals more freedom, which equals a better life. And although that makes sense on paper, it often doesn’t play out that way in reality.
Because money doesn’t change a person. We’ve all seen it – someone gets the bigger salary, the nicer house, the more impressive job, and the stress just follows them there. This isn’t an argument against wanting money… On the contrary! It’s just worth exploring what we actually mean when we say we desire wealth.
Wealth Is About What You’re Willing To Receive
Now, I’d like you to imagine another kind of person who doesn’t have a lot of money but seems genuinely rich in some other way. They’re relaxed, they’re interested in things, they’re good to talk to. Being around them feels easy!
I’d dare to say that that is actually wealth – the real kind. The kind that shapes how much you enjoy your life, how well you relate to people, how open you are to what’s possible. Here’s another way to think about it: wealth is how open you are to letting good things in.
Not just financially good things – but opportunities, support, connection, ease, enjoyment. The people who appear genuinely wealthy seem to be able to receive all of it without shutting down or pushing it away. I would posit that it’s that openness that actually creates a good life – and it’s also usually what allows more money to show up too.
(The opposite can also be true. The more closed off you are, the more you resist people, situations, or feelings, the harder everything gets – including money.)
What Receiving Actually Is
Most of us are more closed off than we realise, and not because we’re doing something wrong. It’s just what happens over time. We form strong opinions about how things should go. We judge ourselves and others. We try to stay in control and manage outcomes. We hold onto conclusions about life that we just stop questioning.
All of that narrows things down. The more fixed your view of how life works, the less of it you actually get to experience.
And this isn’t necessarily a habit you can swap out or a mindset you can install in a weekend. It’s more gradual than that. It’s about becoming a bit less defended, a bit less certain, a bit more willing to let things be what they are.
A Better Question
So if we circle back to our original questions about wealth… The usual wealth conversations ask: how do I get more?
A more useful question could be: what am I not letting in?
Where are you resisting something right now in your lifee a person, a situation, a possibility, and what would change if you loosened your grip on that a little?
Those questions point somewhere different than the standard advice does. Not toward a strategy or a system, but toward something more basic: how open are you actually willing to be?
In Closing: Money Matters But It’s Not The Starting Point
To summarise, none of this means your financial situation doesn’t matter – it does. Money gives you options, security and the ability to make choices
But the version of wealth that actually changes how your life feels isn’t the number in your account. It’s how much of your life you’re willing to show up for. How open you are and how willing you are to letting things in.
People who have that quality tend to create more, attract more, and often make more money too. Not through any particular technique, but because being genuinely open makes things possible that weren’t before.
What would shift for you if you thought about wealth as how much you’re able to receive, rather than how much you have? How much of your own life are you actually willing to receive?
Looking forward to this changing for you in whichever way you choose!
